
BioDEN: A biorefinery approach to harnessing digester as a key raw material in the energy-nutrient link.
The BioDEN project aims to efficiently recover bio-fertilizers from the decomposition products of nutrients (N, P, K) through advanced biogas production, and to generate additional income for the biogas sector.
The project will focus on increasing biogas yield under high organic loading, recovering ammonia through stripping and cleaning with alternative solvents, and recovering phosphorus using innovative precipitation and adsorption techniques.
Different technologies will be evaluated through an integrated value chain, including pot trials and scenario analyses.
The goal of the BioDEN project is:
(i) a 10-20% increase in biogas production due to reduced ammonia inhibition, release of bioavailable organic matter, and high organic loading rates,
(ii) A 3-5% increase in methane content of biogas due to CO2 stripping,
(iii) Optimized processes for the recovery of nutrients into new (ammonium citrate, ammonium bicarbonate) and known (ammonium sulfate, struvite, calcium phosphate) bio-fertilizers.
